Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny launched his career way back in 1974 with a bang. His unique improvisational style that blends “the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility” quickly turned him into a sensation.

Over the decades, Metheny has performed with everyone from Steve Reich to Ornette Coleman and Herbie Hancock.

Next year, Metheny will launch a project he calls Side Eye.

“I wanted to create an ongoing setting to feature a rotating cast of new and upcoming musicians who have particularly caught my interest along the way,” Metheny explains in a press release announcing tour dates for the ensemble.

The group performs on March 23 at the Kent Stage.

“From my earliest days in Kansas City onward, I was the beneficiary of so many older musicians giving me a platform to develop my thing through the prism of their experience and the particular demands of what their music implied," he continues. "I have been feeling like I wanted to have a specific platform to focus on some of the many younger musicians I have enjoyed recently who I have felt some kind of a kinship with.”

The first edition of Side Eye will feature keyboardist James Francies and drummer Nate Smith.

Tickets for the Kent Stage show go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday.
