Papo and Nydvia Ruiz have been running Rincon Criollo (6504 Detroit Rd., 216-939-0992), a popular family-style Puerto Rican restaurant in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood, since 2006. Only now, after 13 years, did the desire and opportunity to expand present itself.

When La Fiesta in the Stockyards neighborhood closed this past fall, the Ruizes got to work on the space (7403 Dennison Ave., 216-331-4525), completely transforming the interior. The new concept, which goes by the name Rincon Criollo Take 2, features a playful cinema themed décor.

“It’s giving honor to Detroit Shoreway where we are coming from, the movie and arts district,” explains Nydvia Ruiz.

When it opens on Tuesday, February 19, Take 2 will be a departure from the original restaurant. While there will still be plenty of hearty Puerto Rican foods, the operation is designed around a quick-serve format starring ready-to-eat prepared foods. A long steam table will be filled with items like savory meat and fish stews, crispy tostones, rice and root vegetables like yucca, Malanga and sweet potatoes.

Whole rotisserie chickens and rice-stuffed Cornish hens will be available every day and weekends will bring specials like pigs ears stewed with potatoes.

Food will be available for carry-out or dine-in, with 28 seats on one side of the space. The other half has been converted from a second dining room to private event and meeting space.

Other than some recent cosmetic improvements, there are no changes at the original restaurant.
