Like Guided by Voices singer Robert Pollard, a songwriter who didn't blossom until reaching his 30s, local singer-songwriter Jack Rugan has penned hundreds of tunes.

Now, he’s just announced that he’ll release Wurlitzer, his 29th album, on Friday, May 17. It’s his first collection of new music since 2007’s Gatherings. The release features songs he wrote on a vintage Wurlitzer piano that he purchased in 1982.

The songs all deal with loss of some sort and reference the death of his father and his recent divorce.

“Even though lyrically the songs are melancholy, the melodies are rather loud and charged at times,” says Rugan in a press release about the album. He'll release the poignant, synth-y single, "Best Advice," tomorrow on Facebook. “I wanted to convey a sense of exasperation and frustration in the music and my singing. It was quite cathartic at times and ultimately brought peace and closure to that chapter of my life.”

Rugan plays an album release party on Saturday, May 18, at Yorktown Lanes. The show will also feature appearances by his band Saul Glennon and by the Rumbling Spires.

The album will be available on CD and on all digitial outlets. Rugan will also release a photo album version feature graphical representations of each song and liner notes.
