Cinematheque to Screen Kurosawa Classic that Inspired Star Wars

Next Saturday, June 29, the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque will screen the 1958 Akira Kurosawa classic The Hidden Fortress, one of the major influences on George Lucas in the making of Star Wars.

Set during the Japanese clan wars of the 16th century, the movie follows a fugitive princess (Misa Uehara) as she escapes through hostile territory with a general (Kurosawa regular Toshiro Mifune) and two bumbling, bickering peasants.

It's a lighthearted comedy-drama that was a huge commercial and critical success in Japan. It also happens to be Kurosawa’s first film shot in a widescreen format, so the action sequences and Japanese landscapes have even more room to breathe.

The Cinematheque's a local treasure, and the 6:50 start time leaves ample room after the 139-minute screening to grab a bite or a drink in Uptown. Tickets are $12 ($9 for the under-25 crowd).
