On Aug. 9, Akron pianist Kofi Boakye will headline his final Akron concert before heading to Berklee School of Music in Boston.

The 19-year-old Emmy-nominated pianist will perform at the Trailhead in North Akron.

A real prodigy, Boakye was accepted into the University of Akron School of Music’s Jazz Program at age 15, making him the youngest African-American pianist to ever be accepted into a collegiate-level jazz program at the University. And in 2016, Boakye performed at the Akron Civic Theatre, making him the first teen pianist to ever headline that venue. Boakye has toured Germany and Prague with the Miller South Show Choir, and in 2014, President Barack Obama gave him the President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence.

“From growing up in the inner cities of Akron, seeing the yellow tape and police sirens all throughout my childhood, the hunger to strive for greatness and do something positive in my life has always been a motivating factor for myself,” says Boakye in a press release about his upcoming show. “I’m African-American and from a single-parent household. Statistically, I’m not supposed to achieve the feats of being accepted into a prestigious and competitive music college like Berklee. But you don’t let the past define you. You can create your own story; all you have to do is write it. This is an opportunity of a lifetime. I relish the change. I relish the college. Most importantly, I relish the challenge. I can’t wait to show Berklee what another kid from Akron is made of.”

The Trailhead event begins at 7:15 p.m. with a cocktail hour and dinner. The performance takes place at 8:30 p.m. and a meet-and-greet follows at 9:45 p.m.

Tickets are $35 in advance for general admission and $45 at the door and can be purchased at KofiBMusic.com. Donations and sponsorships are also being accepted and can be purchased through the ticket link.
