Two dozen of the world’s most talented young violinists descended on the small, musical town of Oberlin this past week for the 2019 Cooper International Violin Competition. Following grueling preliminary and concerto rounds, the field whittles down to six for the Recital Finals on Wednesday, July 24 at 7 p.m. in Oberlin Conservatory’s Warner Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The Competition culminates in the spectacular Concerto Finals on Friday,
July 26 at 7 p.m. in Severance Hall. Gemma New conducts the Cleveland
Orchestra (replacing Bramwell Tovey) as the top three finalists perform complete concertos and vie for the $10,000 grand prize.

Tickets to the Concerto Finals are $15 and $25, with free tickets available for students under 18 accompanied by a paying adult.

The Cleveland Orchestra continues its busy weekend with two different
programs at Blossom Music Center. On Saturday, July 27 at 8 p.m., French
cellist Gautier Capuçon returns to the Orchestra with Saint-Saëns’ formidable
Cello Concerto No. 1, conducted by Gemma New (replacing Bramwell Tovey).
The repertoire also includes Sibelius’ Finlandia and a side-by-side performance of Elgar’s Enigma Variations with young artists from the Kent/Blossom Music Festival, who will present a pre-concert program of Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture and Ravel’s Suite from Mother Goose at 7 p.m. led by Vinay Parameswaren.

The Orchestra pays homage to one of the world’s late, great voices on
Sunday, July 28 at 7:00 pm. “Aretha Franklin: Queen of Soul” explores some of
Franklin’s most beloved music, featuring the inimitable voices of Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw. Lucas Waldin will conduct the Orchestra and the Blossom Festival Chorus. Tickets to both concerts available here.

Ohio Light Opera is operating at full-strength this week with their full summer season in repertory. Hear popular productions like Gilbert & Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance, Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific, along with lesser-known shows like Novello’s Perchance to Dream, and Girl Crazy by the Gershwins.

All performances take place at the Freedlander Theatre on the campus of The College of Wooster. Full schedule and tickets available here.
