Cleveland is one step closer to the return of e-scooters. Today, the city announced that it had selected four vendors who will be invited to participate in a six-month "shared mobility demonstration period."

Bird, the company that unloaded scooters in Cleveland without warning last summer, Lime, Spin and VeoRide were all selected to continue in the city's permitting process.

“The goal of legislation regulating this new industry is to ensure that there are rules and a process for shared mobility devices operating in the City of Cleveland,” said Mayor Frank Jackson, in a statement provided to the media. “Sensible regulation aims to make this mode of transportation safer and more efficient for all sharing the road.”

The four companies were selected from a pool of seven applicants. All were evidently willing to abide by the city's regulations.

The city said that in the coming weeks, city employees will mark parking locations for dockless devices on sidewalks, and that a schedule of public educational events featuring the four selected vendors will be announced by Aug. 16.
