The media relations folks at Cuyahoga Community College claim that no other college or university in the United States has a dinosaur mascot — an assertion we didn't investigate thoroughly — which made the Monday unveiling of Tri-C's new costumed creature, Stomp, a historic moment in the history of collegiate mascotry.

Stomp, sporting black sneakers and a black Tri-C jersey, made his debut at Tri-C's metro and Westshore campuses yesterday. It's traveling to the Eastern Campus in Highland Hills, the Western Campus in Parma and the Brunswick University Center today. Stomp stands seven feet tall from horns to toes and wears number 63 in honor of the year Tri-C was founded.

The "Triceratops" mascot and the Stomp name were both selected by students, faculty and the larger Tri-C community in polls last year.

“A mascot has the power to raise the spirit of the entire College community,” said Tri-C President Alex Johnson in a statement provided to the media. “Stomp is strong, confident and bold — qualities that reflect who we are at Cuyahoga Community College.”

Stomp's unveiling came after six months of design from the team at Street Characters, a company that creates mascots for both collegiate and professional sports, including Chomp of the Cleveland Browns. Scene has long maintained that the bright teal and black are a sharp color combo, and optimal for Triceratops merch.

The stout dinosaur, says Tri-C, "was created as a formidable yet likeable creature capable of firing up crowds and stealing hearts."

Here's a few pics from the unveiling.
