After nearly a full year in cancer treatment, News 5 reporter Olivia Fecteau will return to work next week.

Fecteau, who spoke to reporter News 5 Jessi Schultz for a story that will air tonight during the 11 p.m. newscast in honor of blood cancer awareness month, said she still has roughly 18 months of treatment left, but will begin in a part-time capacity at the station on Oct. 4.

"I've been amazed at all the support from viewers throughout this entire ordeal," Fecteau told Scene, "and it feels good to be coming back to work and telling Northeast Ohio stories again."

Fecteau said that her coworkers at WEWS are "truly a special group of people," who have supported her in many ways during her treatment, from a meal train when she first got out of the hospital last fall, to setting up a GoFundMe to help with medical expenses this spring, to offering regular messages of encouragement.

"They've given all the support and love you could ask for during a really difficult time," she said.

Fecteau joined Channel 5 in 2019 after previous stints at stations in Columbus, Providence, R.I., and Huntington/Charleston, W.Va. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2020 after initially thinking she might have Covid. Reporter Homa Bash reported on Fecteau's cancer journey late last year. The extremely rare form of blood cancer required intensive chemotherapy for several months, followed by less additional courses of chemotherapy.
