 Balaton
    13133 Shaker Square, Cleveland

Talk about underappreciated. When Balaton opened a half-century ago on Buckeye Road, the primary language spoken in the dining room was Hungarian. But word of the modest restaurant's remarkable goulash, Wiener schnitzel, and paprikash wriggled out, at first to the immediate neighborhood, and later to the city and region as a whole. Come to the lovely restaurant at Shaker Square, where Balaton has now resided for 20 years, and you won't be awash in Old World shtick.

Best Bar Trivia Night: Winchester Music Tavern
     12112 Madison Ave., Lakewood

There’s something so Cleveland about the Winchester. Maybe it’s the way it books the familiar (’70s singer-songwriters), the reliable (veteran rockers), and the safe (acoustic duos). Its music room, hidden behind a tiny bar, is surprisingly large and comfortable. In addition to the live music, the Winchester also holds an awesome live trivia night.

Best Fried Chicken: SOHO Chicken + Whiskey
    1889 W. 25th St., Cleveland

Put "chicken" in your name and you better do it right, and SoHo does. While SoHo temporarily changed their concept to a takeout spot called Chicken Run for the pandemic, they’re still serving perfectly fried thighs and breasts. They also have a bunch of different, super flavorful chicken sandwiches and yummy chicken and waffles too.

 Ironwood Cafe
    688 Dover Center Rd., Westlake

Since the dawn of time, the bill of fare at the Ironwood looked, smelled and tasted nearly identical to what slides across the pass at countless saloons; that is to say, generic pub grub. But ever since Lloyd Foust tied on the apron in 2019, this pub has been ever so slowly transitioning to more of a gastropub. There are still wings, burgers and nachos, but there’s also a weekly pasta special courtesy of Ohio City Pasta, an awesome Cubano, a hummus dip and much more.

Cent’s Pizza and Goods
    5010 Lorain Ave., Cleveland

It’s been two and a half years since Vincent Morelli announced his plans for Cent's Pizza + Goods, which originally was supposed to open on the Ohio City/Detroit Shoreway border in 2019. Formerly home to PM Security, the squat brick building has been transformed into a retro-cool slice of nostalgia that blurs the lines between antiquated and avant-garde. In line with the easygoing, communal atmosphere, the menu kicks off with a roster of shareable snacks selected to pair with the house wood-fired bread. For the main event, there are a dozen premade pies from which to choose, dressed with many of the same high-quality products that line the shelves. Diners also can build their own 12-inch, six-slice pies.

Luchita's is well known for its signature mole sauce, served atop enchiladas, burritos and the classic pollo en mole poblano. Xinji Noodle Bar
     4211 Lorain Ave., Cleveland

While it may be hard to ever achieve owner Shuxin Liu's recommended five-minute limit when it comes to consuming a bowl of ramen, a time derived from the lifecycle of a bouncy noodle, it’s damn worth trying. Bowls of chicken and pork-based broth contain fresh noodles, silky slabs of buttery pork belly, corn, scallions, mushrooms and, if you're wise, a soft-cooked egg. If at first you don't succeed in the five-minute drill, try and try again at this fantastic Ohio City noodle bar.
