 EDWINS
    13024 Buckeye Rd., Cleveland

EDWINS made its name as a non-profit upscale French bistro helping formerly incarcerated individuals training in the culinary and hospitality industry. They’ve expanded to two more restaurants, a bakery and a butcher shop all while staying true to their original mission. Recently, they added a Nashville hot chicken sandwich on a temporary basis to their butcher shop menu and it was so popular they had to keep it full time.

 Luxe Kitchen & Lounge
    6605 Detroit Ave., Cleveland

Before there was Toast, Brewnuts, Spice, Astoria, XYZ Tavern and sweet, Sweet Moses there was Luxe Kitchen, an early speculator in the then up-and-coming neighborhood of Detroit Shoreway. When it opened a little over a decade ago, the oh-so-haute bistro joined area mainstays like Rincon Criollo, Happy Dog, Latitude 41 and Gypsy Beans, which perhaps was the first piece on the chessboard of this so-called urban renaissance. Since opening day there have been ups and downs, chefs shifts and menu re-dos – even ownership tweaks – but throughout it all, the restaurant has managed to remain an anchor in this dynamic arts-fueled district. Now they added a bunch of things to the patio like fire pits and blankets for the colder weather.

 Balaton
    13133 Shaker Square, Cleveland

Talk about underappreciated. When Balaton opened a half-century ago on Buckeye Road, the primary language spoken in the dining room was Hungarian. But word of the modest restaurant's remarkable goulash, Weiner schnitzel, and paprikash wriggled out, at first to the immediate neighborhood, and later to the city and region as a whole. Come to the lovely restaurant at Shaker Square, where Balaton has now resided for 20 years, and you won't be awash in Old World shtick.

 Italian Sandwich at Leavened Bakery
1633 Auburn Ave. Ste. 1, Cleveland

It’s a truism to state that all great sandwiches start with great bread. That’s why bakeries like Leavened, which opened this fall in Tremont, have a leg up on the market. Ian Herrington and his team don’t offer many sandwiches, but when the Italian makes an appearance the supply does not last long. Built on horizontally sliced focaccia, the weighty sandwich is stuffed with pepperoni, salami, ham, provolone, tomato and mild but crunchy giardiniera.

 Amba
    1975 Lee Rd., Cleveland Heights

Along with Chimi, the restaurant Amba shares its kitchen with, from popular Chef Doug Katz (Fire, Zhug), is one of the first in Cleveland to have no public access, otherwise known as a ghost kitchen. While Chimi is Katz’s take on South American food, Amba is a modern fusion of Indian flavors. As is the case with Chimi, this ghost kitchen roll-out gives Katz the opportunity to test out a concept in hopes of developing it into a full-service brick-and-mortar restaurant.
