Spuddy Rich Pizza at Corner Spot
    2592 West 14th St., Cleveland

If there’s a bright side to 2020, it was the rise of quirky, nonconventional startups that aim to disrupt the status quo if only to survive these atypical times. One such arrival is Corner Spot, a ghost pizzeria that operates in a church and accepts new customers through Instagram. These thick, rectangular pies are designed from the dough up for the delivery (here, pick-up) age. They are fully baked, but not hot, requiring a few minutes in a hot oven to achieve their intended outcome, namely sharp edges, singed-cheese corners and crusty bottoms. The subtly flavored Spuddy Rich is layered with thin-sliced potatoes, sweet melted onions, garlic confit and rosemary cream.

 Luxe Kitchen & Lounge
    6605 Detroit Ave., Cleveland

Before there was Toast, Brewnuts, Spice, Astoria, XYZ Tavern and sweet, Sweet Moses there was Luxe Kitchen, an early speculator in the then up-and-coming neighborhood of Detroit Shoreway. When it opened a little over a decade ago, the oh-so-haute bistro joined area mainstays like Rincon Criollo, Happy Dog, Latitude 41 and Gypsy Beans, which perhaps was the first piece on the chessboard of this so-called urban renaissance. Since opening day there have been ups and downs, chefs shifts and menu re-dos – even ownership tweaks – but throughout it all, the restaurant has managed to remain an anchor in this dynamic arts-fueled district. Now they added a bunch of things to the patio like fire pits and blankets for the colder weather.

 Cleveland Mofongo Latin Grill
    11621 Lorain Ave., Cleveland

The fast-casual craze has co-opted nearly every other cuisine, so it might as well have claimed Puerto Rican food too. That's the scene over at the new Cleveland Mofongo Latin Grill, which opened in 2017 on the Cleveland/Lakewood border. Dishes like the roasted pork shoulder and the chicharron are satisfying, filling and delicious.

 Proof Bar-BQ
    2258 Professor Ave., Cleveland

Over the past three years, the former Komorowski Funeral Home building on Professor Avenue has transitioned from a place of bereavement to a warren of joyful activity with Visible Voice bookstore on the top floor and Crust pizza on the main floor. Now, in the bottom floor of the same building, Proof Bar-BQ and Cocktails is bringing Southern and Texas-style barbecue to Tremont and they’re killing the BBQ game.

 Jo Jo Carloni’s
    26926 Cook Rd., Olmsted Township

Despite its zip code, the snug space has all the Old World charm of our favorite spag-and-ball joints in Little Italy, where descriptors like "gourmet" and "trendy" are replaced by "hearty" and "comforting" and "I can't believe I ate the whole thing." This spot is definitely worth the drive.

 Ohio Kabob Grill
    3359 West 117th St., Cleveland

“This is one of the best Middle Eastern spots in town and despite the unassuming exterior, is truly a hidden gem in Cleveland. The service was great and you can't beat the amount of food given based on the price. We had the appetizer sampler, gyro kebab and Afghani chicken kebab. Everything in the sampler was delicious, but the hummus, the baba ghanoush and eggplant were divine! The naan was soft and warm, and the meat in both dishes was delectable. The rice had cloves in it which gave it a sweet note and was a new flavor profile that we hadn't tried before. This is a great place to eat and a wonderful way to try new cuisines, I can't recommend more..” Kristin R. on Yelp.
