Mike’s Place

Mike’s Place is a family restaurant that has been around since the summer of 1987. What makes it over the top? Being able to eat inside of a bus, and not to mention the airplane stationed right outside the restaurant. The whole road trip decor with ubiquitous license plates makes this family restaurant stand out from the rest.

New Year's Eve Big '80s Dance Party -

The '80s are known for New Wave music and arcade video games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Quality musical acts such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, the Police, Guns N' Roses, R.E.M. and U2 emerged during the period as well. Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park aims to celebrate all things '80s with its Big '80s party slated to take place on New Year's Eve. The tribute act the Spazmatics will throw a "nerdy" New Wave Dance Party, and there will be screenings of '80s music videos. Patrons can also play classic arcade games and participate in a Rubik's Cube contest. The party will kick into gear at 9 p.m. Tickets cost $35 in advance, $50 at the door. -

Fettucini Carbonara at Nora: The garnish of crispy, delicate matchstick spuds in Nora's carbonara is more than chef's conceit: The addition makes the dish. Arranged like a crown of thorns around the soft noodles, the potatoes add welcome texture to this creamy, oozy dish of pasta, egg and pancetta. A grating of salt-cured egg yolk offers a kick of umami. (Photo courtesy of Emanuel Wallace)

    629 Euclid Ave., 216-621-1505, mikeanddeesdiner.com

Except for the setting, a small interior space off the lobby of the Holiday Inn Express on Euclid, this is a classic breakfast and lunch diner. There's room for 50 on swivel stools at a lengthy counter or at low-slung tables. In the morning, the flattop fills up with French toast, pancakes and three-egg omelets. Lunchtime is all about matzo ball soup, triple-decker Clubs and crispy fries, and griddled Reubens with corned beef, Swiss and kraut on rye.

As thousands of holiday customers gaily tromp through his display, Crumpet regales the audience with hilarious observations about the realities of holiday cheer, all performed with a sardonic wit that has made The Santaland Diaries an enduring holiday favorite.
