It’s not very often that you get to hear a harp concerto; there just aren’t that many of them out there. Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera’s Opus 25 takes his fascination with his country’s folk culture and transports it from guitar to harp. The piece is propelled by a dance rhythm, just as you’d expect from Latin American guitar music. But by setting it to the harp, Ginastera progressed toward a more contemporary compositional style. Meredith Clark is the featured soloist in the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra’s performance of the piece tonight. Back in school less than a month, the CIM Orchestra wastes no time getting onstage with a program that opens with Hector Berlioz’ Overture to Benvenuto Cellini and closes with Dvorak’s New World Symphony.
