The Sterling Recreation Center received a refurbished basketball court from the Cleveland Cavaliers last week. Mayor Frank Jackson officially christened the new space alongside Cavs legends Austin Carr and Jim Chones. A basketball clinic led by Cavs Academy coaches immediately followed the ribbon cutting for 50 nearby kids who frequent the gym.

As part of the controversial Q Deal, the Cavs agreed to modernize or touch up the gyms of 24 recreation centers in the city of Cleveland. Several high school gym floors will undergo refurbishing as well. Depending on the conditions of each gym, the Cavs estimate that it costs between $10,000-$24,000 redoing each floor.

Sterling is the third recreation center in the city of Cleveland to have a Cavs-furnished gym renovation, preceded by Cudell and Earle B. Turner Recreation Centers this past Spring. Estabrook Recreation Center on Fulton Road is next in line for a makeover.

For those who want to check out the newly modernized gym, Sterling Recreation Center is located at 1380 E 32nd St., near Design Lab Early College and Cleveland State University. Sterling's gymnasium holds dodgeball games, athletic conditioning, and open gyms for specific age groups.
