The Grog Shop hosts a CD release party for the full-length debut by HotChaCha tomorrow. Scene just named them city’s best all-girl group, but don’t get us wrong: They’re one of the best bands in the region. Period.
And the album, The World’s Hardest Working Telescope and the Violent Birth of Stars, is on my Top 10 list for the year. It’s an addictive, spacey, rocking trip full of the kind of songs Sonic Youth don’t write any more.
If you haven’t seen the band, click the pic to see the video for the album's first single, “Bob Has a Better Cow.” “Amidst the sounds of a sing-along chorus and artfully placed keyboards, Bosnian-born singer Jovana] Batkovic examines the issue of a Bosnian man’s decision to come to the USA,” says the press material. The song’s a lot more fun than the summary.
Director Jon Mancinetti shot the clip at Walsh Farm in Doylestown, capturing the swooning, jumping band in action. He also directed the suspense/action/world-gone-to-hell flick Never Escape.
HotChaCha CD release party, with Freedom, Founding Fathers and the Compressions. Friday, October 16, at the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., Coventry, 216.321.5588, grogshop.gs). Doors 10 p.m.; cover $5. —D.X. Ferris
