Update III: What killed 28,613 fish in the Rocky River awhile back? Investigators finally know: it was cyanide.

No, some Russian mob syndicate didn’t have a vendetta against thousands of rainbow trout and small-mouth bass. That would be ridiculous, but cool.

No, this was the careless and lazy work of a couple of septuagenarians: 79-year-old Renato Montorsi and his 74-year-old wife Teresina. They own a metal business on Pearl Rd. They use cyanide at said business. They had a 55-gallon drum that should have been disposed of properly at a waste-processing facility. Instead, the Montorsis poured the cyanide down a storm sewer, which led the cyanide into the Rocky River, which led to a whole stinkin’ lot of dead fish. Investigators used an anonymous source, some tips, and good old-fashioned know-how to track down the pair, who are now charged with conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Renato is also facing charges of violating the Clean Water Act, along with being a lazy, boneheaded idiot. (Cleveland.com)

Update II:: No resolution yet to the cause of the mass fish kill in the Rocky River a few months ago, but Ohio and the EPA are still investigating. The latest non-update update:

Vince Grzegorek has been with Scene since 2007 and editor-in-chief since 2012. He previously worked at Discount Drug Mart and Texas Roadhouse.

  1. Upstream from our source of drinking water… somebody dumped something. Guess it’s bottled water for me till we figure out What Now in the Yoohoo River.

  2. PPL they won’t find anyone..there have been lots of die offs everywhere in the world..this is just another one…haven’t you noticed or woken up yet?

  3. What about other wildlife? They have a value too — a natural resource value. What about Great Blue Herons, wood ducks, etc. Was there any evidence they’ve been harmed. What were the results of the NEORSD’s chemical analysis? They should know by now whether there were any chemicals detected in the water above normal levels. I wish there weres some investigative journalists who would also investigate this and report on it.

  4. Look at Wildlife Services of the USDA intentionally killing millions of wildlife, unintentionally killing many more millions. Did they remove a beaver dam, destroy the beavers upstream? Wildlife Services….shoot, shovel, shut-up

  5. Not a good thing. If the fish and other aquatic life has been disrupted, then the chemical in Rocky River may affect drinking water which in turn may negatively affect human health by drinking contaminated water from the tap. I am so against fracking because it is poison to the water table and underground streams – I’d check to see if there is any dumping by fracking outfits in the area – a long shot to be sure…however no stone should be unturned – we don’t want a modern day version of the burning Cuyahoga River! This is the canary in the cave situation on the waterway!

  6. Kudos to Law Enforcement for finding these assholes! I hope they spend the rest of their lives in prison!

  7. They seriously messed up one of our greatest local natural treasures. Make these clowns live out the rest of their sorry-assed lives at the correctional facility in Fishkill, NY.
