Does Cleveland get its proper due? There are endless arguments about that, but we all know there are hidden gems and uniquely local things that make the city stand out but that some might take for granted. To that point: Reddit user AdNumerous6824 recently posed the question ‘What is the most underrated thing Cleveland has to offer.’ The responses were far and wide and showed a very good sampling of the good things our city has.

The Cleveland Orchestra is easily one of the top ten on Earth. You pretty much can’t find a list of great orchestras without Cleveland showing up in the top five or so. Via BatManhandler/Reddit Credit: The Zender Agenda/Flickr
Cafe Everest 14304 Puritas Ave., Cleveland Cleveland just secured another place to enjoy momos, those heavenly filled and steamed dumplings that hail from Nepal. Café Everest, a Nepalese and Indian restaurant, opened in the Bellaire-Puritas neighborhood of Cleveland on August 11. Other specialties of the house include Nepalese-style chicken and noodle soup, pan-fried chow mein noodles and sekuwa, grilled skewers of marinated chicken or goat. A great way to sample a number of dishes is to order the thali, a wide platter containing a variety of small dishes. Photo via Cafe Everest Credit: Doug Trattner

Our aquarium. It’s not the greatest, or the biggest. But, they have one of (possibly THE only) the only breeding programs for weedy sea dragons in the US. Go to another aquarium and see a weedy sea dragon? Extremely high chances it came from here. Via Poetker/Reddit Credit: Erik Drost/Flickr
Pizza. The pizza in Cleveland is by far the best I’ve ever had, and that’s not just a biased point of view. There are a lot of places in the greater Cleveland area that offer really crap pizza, but the joints downtown, do it better than NYC, Chicagoland and LA. What is New York pizza? It’s basically a cardboard slab with melted cheese. What is Chicago pizza? It’s a fucking casserole. What is LA pizza? It’s a lot of things, it being food is questionable. Cleveland pizza is subtle, and delicious. Truly home grown by our Italian and Balkan immigrants. Just outside of the Browns, I’d sooner die on this hill, of our pizza supremacy. CVNP is underrated for sure. It’s free (which is rare for a NP), has a train for those who aren’t inclined for walking a lot, and hiking trails for those who are. Plus, going at different times of year provides a new perspective on different areas.. Via Nat3215/Reddit Credit: Tim Evanson/Flickr

Hospitals …. Bum ticker ? Roll into the Clinic at 0600, then have what is damn near a conveyer line of heart bypass operations running… it’s crazy. Hyper rich people come from all over to get their hearts fixed here. Via Cbelt3/Reddit Credit: Tim Evanson/Flickr

Lekko Coffee 2529 Detroit Ave., Cleveland Last year, the co-working space the Beauty Shoppe and its accompanying café Foyer, both located at the Seymour Building in Ohio City, closed. And while the co-working side of the space will not be returning, the café has a new operator. The new third-wave coffee shop serves standard coffee drinks like drip and pour-over coffee, espresso, cortado, latte, cappuccino, cold-brew and iced coffee. Those are joined by seasonal specialty drinks like pumpkin-spiced coffee flavored with house-made syrups. Food partners supply the shop with quick breakfast items, protein muffins and pastries. The owners hope to add lunch items down the road. Photo by Lindsey Poyar Credit: Lindsey Poyar

The West Side Market. It is, unfortunately, in a long, slow decline, but it is still a jewel. I drive all the way to Cleveland a few times per year just to visit. The building is gorgeous, and the variety is fantastic. Too bad they’re not working harder to save the dwindling outdoor vendors. I just came back with six dozen pierogi from the Pierogi Palace. I have to load up, because it’s several hours each way, for me. Via BatManhandler/Reddit Credit: Pierogis of Cleveland

On the theme of underrated, I’d say Cleveland’s history and place in the industrial revolution. I think few outside of Cleveland would realize it was once the 6th largest city in the country. Via AllNotKnowing/Reddit Credit: Cleveland Memory Project
The USS Cod. It’s not on the level of the museums or the Metroparks, but walking around in an actual World War II diesel submarine isn’t something you can do in just any old city. Via BatManhandler/Reddit Credit: Erik Drost/Flickr
