A visual essayist, critic, programmer and teacher who just happens to also manage Martin Scorsese’s video archive, Mentor-raised Gina Telaroli was named one of Filmmaker Magazine‘s “25 Faces of Independent Film” in 2014. She’ll host a screening of a selection of her films at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 27 at the Nightlight Cinema in Akron. The program includes 35 Minutes Northeast of Cleveland, a film she made with her parents partially in response to LeBron’s decision to leave Cleveland for Miami.
Dubbed Murmurs from Mentor: An Afternoon with Gina Telaroli, the program also includes Agnès Varda’s 1981 documentary, Mur Murs, a film about the public murals in Los Angeles.
“It’s a privilege to be able to bring Gina here,” says Nightlight executive director, Kurtiss Hare, in a press release. “Her work appeals so much to me, not just as a lover of artistic experiences at the movies, but as a fellow cinephile. Telaroli’s love and attention to classic Hollywood strokes shines through in a kind of beaming, radiant way that’s not entirely tied to knowing the ins and outs of her sources. I know spending the afternoon in conversation with her will be a rewarding and unique experience for all who attend.”
