11/4: Derrek Phillips Manufactory at Nighttown

Derrek Phillips, the former drummer for jammy jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter, lends his prodigious talent to Manufactory, a new group that includes guitarist Adam Agati and keyboardist Paul Horton. The whole project exists on the fringes of what’s considered jazz. “In Awe,” the opening track on their new album Offering, begins with a grinding guitar riff before settling into a spacey groove punctuated by Phillips’ terrific drumming. But the record isn’t all prog-rock showmanship. “Close Quarters” features a cool, funky vibe, and there’s some spoken-word mixed into the Beat-like “The Waiting.” They play Nighttown (12387 Cedar Rd., Cleveland Hts., 216.795.0550) at 7 p.m. Tickets: $10. — Jeff Niesel
