As far as string players go, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone as cutting-edge as former Verbow cellist Alison Chesley, who plays under the moniker Helen Money. Her credentials include recordings with bands like Anthrax, Plague Bringer and Russian Circles. She’s booked to play the Asymmetry Fest in Poland next year with heavy-hitting headliners Electric Wizard, and she has a big fan in former Minutemen and Firehose bassist Mike Watt, who’s proclaimed his affinity for her cover of the Minutemen’s “Political Song for Michael Jackson to Sing.” It’s easy to see why the metal and hard-rock contingents like Helen Money. The moody songs on the recent In Tune have a distinctly ominous feel. “MF” builds slowly in intensity before turning into something that sounds like Jimi Hendrix fronting the Kronos Quartet. “Sagrada” and “Too Heavy” are sparser but still plenty spooky.
