Be A Cleveland Film Hero: A GCFC Fan Celebration

To celebrate the release of the new Superman movie, which was filmed in Cleveland, the Greater Cleveland Film Commission hosts this special event at Phoenix Theatres Great Northern Mall, one day before the film’s official premiere. The celebration starts at 5 pm. There will be a raffle with exclusive rare art signed by director James Gunn and the new cast, photo ops, food and music. The film screens at 7 p.m.

Pete Davidson
Since leaving Saturday Night Live, this actor and comedian has scored roles in films such as Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Dumb Money. Known for having done some time in rehab facilities for substance abuse issues, the comedian performs at 7 and 9:45 tonight and tomorrow night at Hilarities.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School
Founded in 2005 in a dive bar in Brooklyn, Dr. Sketchy’s has now spread to more than 100 cities around the world. Dr. Sketchy Akron, a monthly drink and draw event that takes place on the second Thursday of each month at Jilly’s Music Room in Akron, gives patrons the opportunity to “draw glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality.” The fun begins at 7 p.m.; it costs $10 to draw.

Mozart & Strauss
The Cleveland Orchestra plays Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni as well as his Violin Concerto No. 3 and Strauss’s Symphony in F Minor at this concert that takes place tonight at 7 at Mandel Concert Hall.

POP 2000 TOUR with Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC, O-Town, BBMAK
Doors open at 6 p.m. at House of Blues for this concert featuring NSYNC’s Chris Kirkpatrick as a host. The show will feature performances by boy bands O-Town and BBMak as well as singer-songwriters LFO and Ryan Cabrera..

Neal Todten/Buck McDaniel/Jacob Kirkwood/Andrew Elaban
This electronic music showcase features Neal Todten, who’ll perform his score to the film House of Direction, which screened at this year’s Big Ears Festival, Jacob Kirkwood and Buck McDaniel, who’ll perform a co-composed electro-acoustic set that blurs the lines between chamber music, electronics and early American Minimalism. The evening opens with Andrew Elaban presenting a lush ambient electronic set. The show begins at 9 p.m. at the Happy Dog.

Luke Bryan: Country Song Came On Tour
The country music superstar performs tonight at 7 at Blossom. Over the course of his decades-long career, Bryan has delivered 31 No. 1 singles, 17 of which he co-wrote. This tour celebrates the release of the rootsy ballad “Country Song Came On,” a tune that celebrates the party hearty attitude of his fans. Mae Estes, Cole Goodwin and DJ Rock open.

Cain Park Arts Festival
The annual curated arts festival returns to Cain Park in Cleveland Heights, where it continues through Sunday. There will be live entertainment, an interactive mural painting for children, and a variety of food trucks and concessions.

Chagrin Arts Presents Blind Injustice
With music by Scott Davenport Richards and a libretto by David Cote, this opera combines jazz, rock, hip-hop, blues and gospel to tell the story of six Ohioans who were wrongfully convicted and later exonerated through the work of the Ohio Innocence Project. Tonight’s performance takes place at 7:30 at the Outcalt Theatre, where performances continue through Sunday.

A Chorus Line
One of the longest-running Broadway shows ever, A Chorus Line, which began a lengthy run in the West End in 1976, was revived on Broadway in 2006, and in the West End in 2013. Beck Center will present a revamped version of the play. Tonight’s performance takes place at 7:30 p.m., and performances continue through Aug. 10.

GlamGore
Cleveland’s self-proclaimed Vixen of Versatility, Anhedonia Delight presents this monthly, critically acclaimed alternative and themed drag show series at the Grog Shop in Cleveland Heights. Doors are at 8 p.m.

St. Paul & the Broken Bones
Eccentric singer Paul Janeway fronts this soul band out of Birmingham, AL. The group famously caught the attention of major record labels after self-releasing the alternative soul debut, Greetings from St. Paul and the Broken Bones. The group performs at 7 p.m. at MGM Northfield Park — Center Stage. The Wood Brothers, a terrific blues/folk/Americana act, open.

Yelawolf 45 Tour
The narrative-minded rapper brings his latest tour to House of Blues. Up-and-coming urban country artist J. Michael Phillips will open. He and Yelawolf just released their moody new single, “I Swear,” and they’ll perform it live together. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Carmina Burana

The Cleveland Orchestra, the Blossom Festival Chorus and the Cleveland Orchestra Children’s Chorus team up for this special concert featuring a performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana. It begins at 7 p.m. at Blossom.

Mike Epps
Veteran comedian Mike Epps got his start way back in the ’90s when he hopped on the Def Jam Comedy Tour. Portraying Day-Day Jones in the cult comedy hit Next Friday helped increase his profile too. He’s been acting and doing standup ever since. He comes to the Funny Bone for shows that take place at 6:30 and 9 tonight and tomorrow night.

Jaws 50th Anniversary Screening
Jilly’s Music Room in Akron hosts this special anniversary screening of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster film. Film professor Jim Fortunato will be on hand to provide commentary about the movie’s background, and the club will serve brunch during the screening. It begins at 11 a.m.

Kent Blues Fest
The 16th annual Kent Blues Fest takes place today at venues all over Kent. The popular festival will offer free live music by more than 30 acts at 20 locations, including restaurants, bars, bookstores and outdoor parks. Blues harp master Wallace Coleman, known for his many years with Robert Lockwood Jr, and the Numbers Band, Akron/Kent’s experimental blues rock band are among the acts slated to perform. Music in the Valley Folk & Wine Festival

Mead and wine vendors from across Ohio will be on hand for this two-day festival that takes place at Hale Farm & Village in Akron. The folk group Hunter Skeens and the Forerunners will also perform. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Phillips Brothers Song Swap Concert
Formerly of the Cleveland band Rotary Ten, brothers Dan (Zapruder Point) and Scott (the Monologue Bombs) Phillips will reunite for this special show that’ll find them playing a mix of covers and original tunes. It begins at 7 p.m. at Spotlight Cleveland.

Superman Movie Party & Fan Event
This special event that celebrates the release of the new Superman movie will feature panel discussions with acclaimed DC Comics writers and artists, immersive photo ops, hands-on crafts, live performances, games, giveaways and a Cosplay Masquerade. The celebration also honors Cleveland’s legacy as the birthplace of Superman. It takes place from noon to 6 p.m. at Skylight Park at Tower City Center.

Wax Mage Records Anniversary Party

Idobi Radio Summer School Tour
Kevin Lyman (Warped Tour), Eric Tobin (Hopeless Records) and Michael Kaminsky (KMGMT) founded this traveling music festival that channels the ethos of Warped and old-school Lollapalooza. The concert features seven up-and-coming bands who play alternating set times each night. The bill features Taylor Acorn, Charlotte Sands, Arrows in Action, Rain City Drive, If Not For Me, Beauty School Dropout and Huddy, and the show starts at 5 p.m. at the Agora.

Sammy Obeid
The self-described Lebanese-Palestinian-Syrian-Italian-American brings his standup show to Hilarities. He famously performed 1001 nights in a row and has been featured on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and America’s Got Talent. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Reggae Sundays
