On the Rise Artisan Breads

On The Rise was recently one of Food and Wine Magazine’s Top 100 Bakeries in the Country and we totally agree. In addition to their freshly baked breads and other baked goods, the bakery is known for having some of the best chocolate chip cookies this side of anywhere, other tasty desserts and a banh mi we’ve called one of the best sandwiches in Cleveland.

For more than 15 years, Koko Bakery has lured Asian food fans to its downtown store for fresh-baked buns, colorful fruit tarts, cakes and pastries, hot lunches and delicious bubble tea. Come this summer, the popular Asiatown shop will open its second location, this one out east in Coventry Village. The location is the former Piccadilly Artisan Yogurt space next door to Pacific East. Xu says that the shop will be nearly identical to the original in terms of items offered. They will be outfitting the space with its own bakery.

With Wax and Mandel and Pincus bakeries closing in recent years, Davis Bakery is one of the only Jewish bakeries left in town. Davis, which opened in 1939, is known for their coconut bars, their russian tea biscuits and their chocolate chip cookies. (Their hot pastrami is to die for as well.)

What started in 1966 in a small apartment on West 25th Street in Ohio City has turned into one of the best bakeries in Cleveland, for over 50 years. They’re known for their “old world” quality, especially when it comes to their napoleons (kremes), which is layers of light vanilla custard and real whipped cream between two sheets of hand crafted puff pastry.

Even though Floressa doesn’t have their own retail space yet (they’re working on it), their baked goods are so beloved and aesthetically pleasing that we had to include them here. The newest entry to the Cleveland baking scene, Leavened has already established itself as one of the best in town. Like all great bakeries, Leavened imbues the neighborhood with heaven-sent scents like fresh-baked loaves, still-warm sticky buns and fresh-brewed coffee. A landmark Italian bakery, Rito’s has been baking since 1965. They’re known for their Italian cookies like biscottis and amaretti and their award winning cannolis and especially their Gigantic Cannoli, which was featured on the Food Network’s Guilty Pleasures.

Polish bakeries really are popular in Cleveland. And that’s the case with Amherst’s Kiedrowski’s Bakery. Their snoogles, a Polish puff pastry wrapped in sweetened cream cheese with a vanilla butter bean glaze on top, is world renowned and to die for.

Kelsey Elizabeth’s cakes have been featured on the Katie Couric Show and in Reader’s Digest. They’ve won Scene’s Best Cakes multiple times. While Kelsey only opened her first bakery in 2014, they have quickly established themselves as arguably the most popular bakery in Northeast Ohio, now with locations in Rocky River, Avon Lake, Crocker Park and Cedar Point. The ever-changing roster of daily offerings are out of this world and the specialty cakes are next-level awesome in design and flavor. And the cakesicles. Yum.

Local chef Eric Rogers has built up a nice mini-empire in a few short years. The Fresh Fix focuses on vegetarian-forward foods and smoothies, Black Box Fix knocks out decadent, scrumptious sandwiches and fries and The Sweet Fix is his spot to try tasty desserts. Cakes, cookies and pies are the name of the game here and you really can’t go wrong.
