Don’t be too quick to dismiss CKY as a knuckle-dragging skate-metal band. Blame this misconception on obnoxious MTV dwarf Bam Margera, whose brother Jess is CKY’s drummer. The group makes a fascinating and unique kind of hard rock — featuring Moog synths as prominently as loud guitars — which owes as much to early ’80s AOR prog-rockers like Rush and Asia as it does to heavy ’90s groups like Helmet and Quicksand. CKY’s latest album, Carver City, is one of 2009’s most intriguing semi-mainstream rock albums, packed with killer songs like “A#1 Roller Rager,” “Woe Is Me” and “Rats in the Infirmary” that combine Fu Manchu-esque stoner-rock with unexpected new-wave touches.
