There are very few surprises in
Gay Sex in the '70s , a documentary screening tonight at the Cleveland Cinematheque about, well, gay sex in the '70s. You go into this movie pretty much knowing what to expect: plenty of gay men talking about three-decades-old random hook-ups that happened in the dark corners of clubs, trucks, and piers. Extensive film footage from back in the day all set to a pulsating disco beat details N.Y.C.'s homo hotspots, where mustached men would court other mustached men by simply tugging their crotches. It all came to a screeching halt as the first AIDS cases began to trickle into the community. Modern-day interviews with survivors are both sobering and triumphant. As the film makes clear, there'll never be another era like it.
