Organizers of the Sommer Oktoberfest point out the single biggest advantage of throwing its party two months ahead of schedule. “Why drink beer when it is cold outside?” asks Josef Holzer, president-emeritus of the Donauschwaben German Club, which hosts the annual event. The weekend-long fest -- which kicked off Friday with a ceremonial keg-tapping -- features traditional eats, ale, and dancing. The Hank Haller Band, Al Nowak and His Edelweiss Orchestra, and Fred Ziwich and His International Sound Machine provide the music.

Today is also family day, and revelers are encouraged to bring the little ones for some face-painting and lots of hands-on activities. And if strolling clowns aren’t your thing, “There will be plenty of beer for the grown-ups,” says Holzer, an octogenarian who credits his long life to drinking lots and lots of beer.
