Madison Avenue on East 4th

Cocktails in style coming soon

Society Lounge, a new "Mad Men"-era cocktail destination, will be opening on E. 4th Street in the lower level of the Frederick Building, which also houses Saigon Restaurant & Bar.

"Although our décor will reflect the era between 1950 and 1970 — essentially the time period of Mad Men — our vintage cocktails will be from pre-prohibition to World War II," says Society Lounge owner Andrew Pucella.

Cocktails will be made with hand-squeezed juices and house-made sodas, with small plates and live music accompanying the spirits. "It will be a place that will return us to a time when folks dressed up to go to a bar and listen to live, Rat Pack style-music with a great cocktail in their hand," he says.

Although Society is doing its best to be open by the end of February, the first week in March is more realistic.

And Speaking of Cocktails

We told you last month about Doug Katz' plans for the two diner cars in Cleveland Heights that have housed a score of short-lived restaurants in recent years. The Katz Club Diner will occupy one space; the second, he announced, will be a speakeasy – a Velvet Tango Room east, if you will – called the Katz Club.

"It will be a 'bar car' to complement the dining car," he says.

It will open later in the evening and be a private, more intimate space featuring 'kitchen cocktails.' The menu will include craft cocktails made from scratch using exquisite ingredients all prepped in our kitchen along with an array of small plates. We'll be open until 1 a.m."

Katz Club will be open Thursday through Sunday, and the space will be available for private functions the rest of the week.

Even More Booze News

Deagan's is expanding its operation with a second location, a new wine bar that will open in Lakewood Plaza this spring.

"We're excited about opening a second location with a new concept," says Dan Deagan. "Although our atmosphere will be casual, our food and wine will be of the highest quality. We're glad to be bringing something to Lakewood that we feel has been lacking there -- a wine bar with an extensive wine list and a simple menu."

His executive chef will once again be Tim Bando, who mans the menu at Deagan's.

The 2,000-square-foot space located just to the east of Discount Drug Mart will seat 65. An outdoor patio, the perfect setting for a glass of your favorite vintage, is also in the works.

Lunch Just Got Better

Bac Asian American Bistro will begin serving lunch on Monday, Jan. 28th, from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Which is a welcome addition to the mid-day dining options – read: very few – in Tremont.

"In addition to our lunch plates — which will be smaller versions of our dinner entrees, priced at $9 — we will also have 'Bento Bac' lunch combinations: Three items for $10 and four items for $12," says Chef/Owner Bac Nguyen says.

The streamlined menu includes fourteen of their most popular entree items; Vietnamese Noodle Salad, Kim Chee, Pad Thai, Coconut Milk Crepe and more.

Blossoming in Brunswick

The Orchard House opened last week at Mapleside Farms in Brunswick, replacing Melrose Grill, which closed Jan. 1. Orchard offers farm-fresh fare as only a restaurant located on a farm can. They retained some of the more popular menu items from Melrose Grill while emphasizing a clearer connection to the farm.

Providing an extensive menu, The Orchard House features an array of comfort foods and home-style BBQ favorites prepared in an applewood smoker.

Orchard House is owned and managed by Scott Kuhn, who owns and manages such popular destinations as 87 West At Crocker Park, The Allegheny Grille, Hodge's, Washington Place Bistro & Inn and The Welshfield Inn.

Mapleside Farms, voted one of the Top Ten Most Beautiful Farms in America, lends a scenic backdrop and bounty to the new restaurant.
