No Getting Lucky’s this Weekend

Fans of weekend brunch at Lucky’s Café, Heather Haviland’s nationally noted Tremont bakery, coffeehouse, and casual eatery, are going to have to chill for one more weekend. While the remodeled café reopens this Wednesday, Oct. 3, for coffee, sandwiches, and baked goods, the popular weekend brunch service won’t resume until Saturday, Oct. 13, in order to give workers a chance to finish laying flooring. Despite the delay, Haviland is psyched about her upgraded digs, including a doubling of her kitchen space. “It was like camping!” she laughs, about her former storage-closet turned cooking facility, which now boasts a full-size range along with other culinary essentials. The new work area will also allow Haviland to expand her menu offerings, adding items like freshly baked bagels, apple fritters, and English muffins to the weekend lineup, which is usually served from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday. She’ll also start adding a few brunch items to the weekday menu, on a rotating basis, and begin featuring a few more substantial lunch items, including individual pizzas and comfort-food entrees. Meantime, plans are moving ahead for Haviland’s newest Tremont endeavor, a European-style bakery and café on Thurman Alley, with a menu built around freshly baked breads and artfully plated desserts. Tentative opening date for that project: May 2009. And finally, we got an update on Andy Strizak, former executive chef at the departed Parker’s New American Bistro, and – whenever she needs an extra pair of highly trained hands – Haviland’s “favorite Band-Aid. He’s been working with (chef de cuisine) Matt Harlan at Lolita lately, and loving it!” --- Elaine T. Cicora
