Thursdays at East Fourth's Corner Alley, it’s good to be a lady

It’s almost comical to watch Mary Ann Sodowski go all giddy at the Corner Alley. On Thursdays, the Solon secretary can’t decide if she’s more amazed when she breaks 100 on her bowling game or that the glitzy sports bar lets her play for free. “Where can you go downtown and not spend a penny?” asks Sodowski. “They even pick up the the tab for the shoe rental.” She’s not kidding. Between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. every Thursday, the 16-lane bowling center, one of the cornerstones of the East Fourth District, waives its $35-an-hour rate for women. It also knocks off $3 on the price of apps, specialty drinks, martinis, and 25-ounce pours of draft beer between 11:30 a.m. and 9 p.m from its stylish sister club, the 4th Street Bar & Grill. “From now on, this is the place to get your bowling on,” laughs Sodowski, on the heels of her fifth consecutive gutter ball. “You won’t find me in any of those dumpy alleys anymore.” – Cris Glaser
