Cleveland Cinemas marketing director Dave Huffman is particularly
excited about A.P.E., this week’s Cult Film Series
feature at the Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd., 216.321.5411, clevelandcinemas.com), which will
screen in old-fashioned 3D at 9:30 p.m. and midnight Saturday, November
7. Tickets are $6.

“I can’t find a record of anyone playing the film in its original 3D
format for over 30 years,” says Huffman, adding that he first heard of
the film from a friend, who showed him an ad from its previous
Cleveland showing in 1976. “I’ve sort of become obsessed with getting
an audience to see this hilarious, awful movie. We like to show a lot
of things that people have heard of, but I like to include a few
obscure titles. We’ve proved with the Cult Series that a bad movie can
be just as much fun as a good movie when you have a fun audience to
watch it with. It’s a fun, bad movie.” Jack H. Harris, the same guy who
produced The Blob, owns the rights to the film, and Hoffman
personally contacted him to get a 3D print from the Academy Film
Archive. “We also made three little short films for the Cedar Lee’s
Facebook page,” says Hoffman. “They depict a scene from the movie in
which the Ape fights a shark, and they thrash around for an
inordinately long time.” See them at youtube.com/user/clevelandcinemas.
