Yesterday, the City of Cleveland honored Bill Peters with a Resolution of Congratulations for the 35th anniversary of his radio show and charity work. Council President Kevin J. Kelley presented the recognition award to Peters at City Hall.
"This was totally unexpected!" says Peters, a WJCU DJ who throws an annual fundraising metal concert at the Beachland each year, in a press release about the recognition. Peters also owns the local label, Auburn Records. "I'm humbled and honored. It's nice to be recognized. I was born and raised in Cleveland. I've turned down several job relocation promotions over the years to stay in this area. I love it here! The radio show and my charity work have always been a labor of love for me. I dedicate this recognition award to my parents. My mom was ecstatic when she heard the news! She's my biggest fan and has always been very supportive of everything I do. My dad was a lifelong Clevelander and would have been so proud too. He passed away five years ago but is still with me in spirit."
Peters has hosted his Friday night heavy metal radio Metal On Metal on John Carroll University's WJCU 88.7 FM since 1982. It's the longest running heavy metal show in radio history. This year’s benefit concert at the Beachland generated record donations for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Friends of the Cleveland Kennel animal rescue group.
"Heavy metal fans are the most generous when it comes to supporting good causes," says Peters, who also thanked his volunteer crew and sponsors. "They never cease to amaze me. Our donation totals keep increasing significantly. Working together we are making a positive difference in our community. It feels good to give something back to help those less fortunate."
