Nashville native Deana Carter, an OG from the renaissance of Country Music that exploded in the latter half of the 1990s, played the Lorain Palace Theater on Saturday evening.
Hailing from a musical family, her father Fred was a journeyman musician with a resume extending from a successful solo career in Nashville to session work with Joan Baez and Simon & Garfunkel, among others.
Carter’s career skyrocketed with her most popular album in 1996, Did I Shave My Legs for This? She shot to the top of this new wave with the likes of Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, and The Dixie Chicks. Noted for songs of heartbreak, female empowerment, and her melodic voice, she released fourteen singles and charted three number one hits on the Country Billboard chart: “Strawberry Wine,” “How Do I Get There,” and “We Danced Anyway,” all of them from her debut album.
The Palace crowd was rowdy and looking for a good time. Taking the stage a little after 8:00, Carter delivered a joyful 90-minute performance. Unlike many dour-faced performers, she appeared to be having a genuinely good time with her band and the audience. Several times throughout the night, fans ran up to the stage from their seats holding up homemade signs proclaiming their love for her and her music.
Lorain native Jaclyn Bradley opened with a few tunes to get the crowd together. After moving to Europe several years ago, she performed on both “Ireland’s Got Talent” and “The Voice of Holland.” She’s released four studio albums over the years.
