It was a bittersweet night at Blossom on Sunday as Sum 41 made its last stop in Cleveland. The band is no longer making music and will no longer be touring. So it was a last chance to see a band that was part of so many lives of those who grew up in the 2000s.
Their final curtain call if you will, as they had a giant curtain hanging to hide the stage before they came out, came falling to the ground as they exploded on to the stage to start the show after openers Many Eyes and The Interrupters got the crowd moving.
The Canadian rock band, which really broke on to the scene with their album ‘All Killer No Filler’ in 2001, brought fans from all over to say their goodbyes. Parents brought their kids to relish in the many memories as we were blessed with classics such as “Fat Lip” and “Still Waiting”.
Sum 41 played all of the band’s greatest hits and earlier songs with an almost two-hour long show, transporting us back in time to our youth when we listened to these albums on our CD players, stuffed into the pockets of our oversized jeans, hanging around the skatepark.
Lead singer Deryck Whibley thanked the fans for singing back the lyrics, saying what an incredible feeling it is. After the crowd booed at the mention of the band calling it a day, he said, “Oh come on, it’s been over 30 years. I think the world has had enough of Sum 41!”
As with many of these shows, the set was accompanied by lots of confetti, streamers, air cannons, and pyrotechnics.
After finishing the main set with “Still Waiting,” Deryck and mates came back out for a three song encore, playing “Summer,” “Waiting On A Twist Of Fate,” and finishing with “In Too Deep.”
