Square Records celebrated its sixth anniversary at Akron’s Musica on Friday by throwing down an evening full of the best indie rock Akron has to offer. Tiger Fighter, Dinomania, local legends the Bizzaros and Drummer (which features five local drummers, including the Black Keys' Patrick Carney) hammered through sets.
Gearing up for their first tour, as well as the release of their first album (Feel Good Together, which comes out next month) Drummer headlined with a loud guitar- and drums-driven set. Hard to believe this was only their fifth show as a band.
Their set kicked off with "Diamonds to Shake" and included "Lottery Dust," "Serious Encounters," "Buddyscapes" and a cover of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me." Their show ended with "Summer Control."
Throughout their set, guitarist Jamie Stillman and drummer Greg Boyd laid a solid foundation for Jon Finley’s wailing vocals, while Carney’s bass and Steve Clement's keys pieced everything together.
The band may be just a side project for the guys (all of whom are involved with other bands). But their show the other night may change all that. —Jeremy Hills
