They say things happen in threes, and that’s definitely the case with reunion shows by Cleveland pop-rock bands from the early-mid ’90s.
With the World in a Room reunion in May and the Jehova Waitresses show last weekend out of the way, this weekend it’s the Waynes’ turn. They’ll be performing at the Happy Dog Saloon at 9 p.m. Saturday. Admission: $5.
The quarter — Matt Sobol and Laurie Hallal on guitars and vocals, Derek Poindexter on bass and Kurt Triptow on drums — was known for their spirited, poppy, acoustic-flavored tunes, their vocal harmonies and the blend — and contrast — of Sobol’s and Hallal’s vocals.
They upended the expected balance of boy/girl vocals, with Sobol possessing the sweet, high voice and Hallal’s alto offering deeper, richer tones. The band put out one album, 1994’s Long Road Gravity, in addition to an earlier cassette release, Easy Coast Slo. Sobol went on to play with Superkreme in the late ’90s and has occasionally performed since.
He made a guest appearance onstage at last week’s Jehova Waitresses concert at the Grog Shop, even performing a new song he’s written called “See the Rockets.” Poindexter has continued to maintain a very active presence in the local music scene; he’s currently playing with Pale Hollow. —Anastasia Pantsios
