Everyone knows about the mammoth Garfield monument in Lakeview Cemetery (the top of which, among other things, boasts one of the city's most picturesque views of downtown), but that's not the only gravestone of note in Northeast Ohio. In addition to politicians and industry titans, Cleveland's subterranean chambers host a slew of innovators and quirky historical celebs.

Lakeview Cemetery is of course the magnet for the region's biggest deaths (and gaudiest gravestones) of yesteryear, but take a tour through this slideshow to get a glimpse of some famous graves at Lakeview and elsewhere.

Lakeview Cemetery: Basically THE Captain of Industry back in the booming age of oil and machinery. He started Standard Oil and became a tycoon and philanthropist; gravestone eerily reminiscent of Washington Monument.

Lakeview Cemetery: The first black mayor of a major American City (Cleveland, 1968). Nuff said.

Lakeview Cemetery: Iconic prohibition-era investigator in Chicago, later, the director of public safety in Cleveland; namesake of the greatest amber lager in history.

Lakeview Cemetery: Cleveland Indians' shortstop; only player in Major League history to die from being hit by a pitch; gravestone adorned with baseball memorabilia.

Lakeview Cemetery; Another baseball player to die from being hit by a pitch, only poor Cupid never made the majors. He played second base for the Ohio Central League and was a reported fan favorite; finally received headstone at Lakeview in 2010.

Lakeview Cemetery: The father of Higbee's -- originally Higbee & Hower Dry Goods, and ultimately Dillard's.

Woodland Cemetery: Black civil war vet; one of 86 buried at Woodland, though many headstones remain unmarked.
