Asdrubal Cabrera to DL, Juan Diaz Called Up

Well damn. Tribe shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera has been placed on the 15-day disabled list following a strain to his right quad running out a ground ball in the fifth inning of last night's 7-4 loss to the New York Yankees.

Juan Diaz has been recalled from Triple-A Columbus to fill the vacant roster spot. Diaz, who's only hitting .211 with the Clippers, played five games last year in a Tribe uniform and may see even less this time around.

Manager Terry Francona has said that Mike Aviles will assume Cabrera's daily duties and Diaz will be used merely for protection. Aviles is batting .283 in 106 at-bats this year. He was the Boston Red Sox' everyday shortstop a year ago, and should fill Cabrera's shoes admirably in his absence.

The 2013 injury carousel got off to a slow start with the laceration to Michael Bourn's finger and nagging injuries to our pitching staff (Myers, Pestano, Perez) which at times felt like blessings in disguise. But Cabrera's quad issue should assure us that the health issues aren't going anywhere.
