When we spoke to mash-up artist Girl Talk (Gregg Gillis) earlier this year, he fondly reminisced about the days when he would perform at underground clubs in Cleveland, where he had moved to study biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. “There was a time around 2000 when you could go to Speak in Tongues, or a venue like that, and see some raw shit,” he said. “You’d see some crazy stuff that was only in the context of ‘right now.’ Meaning: It’s not going to be on the Internet and people aren’t doing this to get a viral video. It was a bit more of a free-for-all vibe. Again, I don’t think it’s the way it should be, but it was cool while it lasted.” Girl Talk has moved on to bigger and better venues — tomorrow he’ll play a free show at 8 p.m. at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica. The concert is part of Budweiser’s Made in American tour. Tickets are free but must be reserved through the Budweiser website

Jeff has been covering the Cleveland music scene for more than 25 years now. On a regular basis, he tries to talk to whatever big acts are coming through town. And if you're in a local band that he needs to hear, email him at jniesel@clevescene.com.

  1. total waste of time and effort.. Budweiser should be ashamed at how they did this event. “At Capacity”… No where did it state you had to go to the venue with your ticket and get a laminated ticket to get in. This was a joke.
