The Chardon High School tragedy is still acutely painful for the families and friends of the victims and for the community as a whole. The first funeral, for Daniel Parmertor, will be held tomorrow morning and funerals are no time to be worrying about extraneous nonsense. Unfortunately for Chardon, they’ve had to worry.
Earlier this week nut jobs from members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist “Church” announced via Twitter their intentions to picket the young man’s funeral service. For those not familiar with this relatively small congregation, these are the people who have made headlines by protesting military funerals and services for other high-profile individuals while holding signs and shouting something about how “God Hates Fags.”
This “Church” makes a point of celebrating any untimely death because it believes that tragedies such as Chardon’s are God’s punishment for the U.S. being so lax in anti-gay matters. To be clear, these idiots people are delighted when something like this happens.
No one can be sure the Westboro group will actually show up but whether they do or not, it’s certainly causing an additional headache. In response to news that there may be anti-gay protesting, a Facebook event was created to recruit folks to form a wall of separation of sorts, between the Westboro contingent and those paying their respects.
The problem? As of now, close to 2,000 people say they intend to be in Chardon tomorrow to help shield the mourners from the Westboro Baptists.
Chardon Police, who are well aware of both plans, did not return Scene‘s calls today. They’ve been too busy.

There is a special place in hell for these so called christians from Westboro Baptist Church. How can these so called God fearing people act so much like Satan himself? God loves everyone, so why do they seem to hate everyone, take your extremism elsewhere, we don’t want it. These families deserve the right to mourn their loss with respect, where is the respect from this church? God have pity on Westboro Baptist Church when their day comes.
They want to get people to feel bad and they seem to do it everywhere they go. They go to the places where the pain is the most raw and the most easily thrown salt upon. They are the opposite side of freedom of speech like the kkk and the Nazi party. Just thank God they are not the majority and that most of even the lowest among us see this group as clearly wrong.
Those interested in joining first thing in the morning- We will be meeting at CHARDON HIGH SCHOOL at 6:45am. Roads may be blocked and parking may be crazy so plan accordingly. Dress for the weather. Bring your friends. Remember this is a group put together to support the family and the community with the main goal of keeping the WBC out of sight. NO VIOLENCE will be accepted or tolerated. Please understand that the Westboro Baptist Church is a family of lawyers who intend to provoke you into assaulting them. From the assault they will sue you. Make sure that there are no hotheads in your group. They call themselves a church to avoid taxes but their source of income is from lawsuits that result from response to their provocation.
I can’t actually verify what pinarello says about this “church” group. However, I can definitely verify, and perhaps should have emphasized when writing this blog post, that the organizers asking people to come out to blot out Westboro people if they show, are also asking you to STAY HOME if you have any doubt whatsoever about your ability to keep your mouth shut and not engage in discourse, argument, or worse with these people.
I’m not a particularly religious person but I must say that the affected will be in my prayers in the traditional sense. Now as far as the Westboro Baptist Churh, I’ll pray that there will be divine intervention and as many of them as possible will see the error of their ways. As far as the rest of them, I would “pray for them”, as the song goes. I would pray that all sorts of messed up stuff happens (naturally of course because we don’t want people to take the law into their own hands) if for no other reason than to demonstrate that indeed bad things happen to even the most “righteous” among us sometimes.

The whole WBC operation makes my heart hurt. I feel so sad for the families and community of these children. It is incomprehensible to me that any decent human being would do this type of antic. The good that can come of it however is the reflection of the kindness, love and support of the community of people who are willing to shield the family from this hateful display. It also sheds a light on the futility and true anti-Christian nature of hate.
Thanks Maude for making the clear statement that no one will help anyone at the school or in the community by spitting poison back at poison. Chaos and potential violence is the last thing anyone with any sense wants.

Mona, I know most people seeing your heart felt words of Jesus and the forgiveness which is always to be given hear nothing of what you have said. I have posted my anger and my desire to see these people physically harmed and for this I am sorry. To see them see Christianity in its truer form (as you see it), should be my message. Someone should have “mis” informed the group of idiots and told them the funeral was in Lorain. They would get what’s coming to them by starting BS there.
