For more than ten years, Medina residents have been provided with a free night of Elizabethan goodness courtesy of Shakespeare In The Square. Once part of the now defunct Stage Left Theatre Company, Shakespeare In The Square performs an annual full-scale Shakespearean play with a slight twist. Last year brought a rockabilly inspired production of The Taming of the Shrew and this Labor Day will be a vintage-circus themed performance of As You Like It.

As technology advances and attention spans shorter, it seems unreal that a theatre exclusively performing Shakespeare can still exist in 2018. Veteran performer and Shakespeare In The Square board member Joe Kenderes spoke to Scene, "It's cliche, but Shakespeare is so universal and there are still so many ways to tell his stories." He continued, "His work is poetry. It's structured almost flawlessly."

In recent years, the show's funding was provided by either Medina Show Biz or Cameo, but Shakespeare In The Square has gone independent for 2018. With the exception of sound equipment provided by one of the Shakespeare In The Square board members, the theatre is now completely penniless and without resources to put on their family friendly and free annual show.

Rather than begging for money or launching a crowd-funding campaign, Shakespeare In The Square is hosting a fundraising night of drunken Shakespeare. "The event celebrates the Bard's work, but in a playful way. It will have a very Who's Line is it Anyway feel," claimed Kenderes.

The event titled "Shakespeare on the Rocks" will begin as a cocktail hour, where performers will mingle, chat and yes, drink. "There will also be audience drinking games for those not driving," said Kenderes.

Immediately afterward, those tipsy performers will attempt to deliver some of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues and scenes. Kenderes continued, "We'll have monologues performed by celebrity impersonators, interpretive dance, famous shakes scenes done by crazy characters or personality traits, and much more!"

The free summer shows consistently brings out huge audiences, which may be hard to believe for today's tech-obsessed society. "Given the increasing audience acceptance of embracing of breaking gender roles and casting traditionally 'white' characters as people of color, I think it's a perfect time to do Shakespeare," Kenderes said. "Let's see these stories we know told through a different lens."

Shakespeare on the Rocks is happening April 28th with a 7 p.m. cocktail hour and an 8 p.m. show. Each $25 ticket includes admission, hors d'oeuvres, and a cocktail. The venue for the show is Williams on the Lake, 787 Lafayette Rd, Medina OH 44256
