John Heisman, the namesake of the Heisman Trophy, was born in 1869 at 3928 Bridge Avenue in Ohio City. (An historical marker was long located at the wrong address, something that was rectified recently.) Heisman went on to play college football at Brown and Penn and then enjoyed a long coaching career, starting locally at Oberlin and Buchtel University (now University of Akron) before spending most of his career at Georgia Tech. Because of his innovations as a coach, including inventing shifting and calling ‘hike’ and leading the effort to change from halves to quarters, listing downs at yardage on the scoreboard and being a leading proponent of the forward pass, the Heisman Trophy, awarded annually to the best college football player, was named after him after his death in 1936.
You can now own a piece of history — the real Heisman House — with this 2,100-square-foot, 2 bedroom, 3 bath home that’s walking distance to many Ohio City attractions.
