In a statement provided to Channel 5 following reports of technical issues with the UH Bikes fleet, a UH spokesperson said that the hospital system had notified the bike share operator, Cycle Hop, that they’d be concluding their sponsorship.
“We supported the launch of their bike-sharing program in Cleveland and established it through our sponsorship over three years,” the statement read. “The notification allows Cycle Hop to pursue a new sponsor.”
Cycle Hop’s parent company told Scene last week that they were hoping to upgrade the local fleet with new bicycles by Spring, 2020. New bikes, (with functional tech and perhaps even a new color scheme), may provide some appeal to potential sponsors.
The bike-share system will be facing much more competition soon as Cleveland announced last week that four vendors of electronic bikes and scooters — Bird, Lime, Spin and VeoRide — had been selected for a six-month demonstration period.
