Fairfield County, Ohio — located about two and a half hours away from Cleveland — is home to an ever-growing collection of human-sized scarecrows. Currently, there are about 200 and counting.
Yes. The people of the nine communities that make up Fairfield (Amanda, Baltimore, Bremen, Carroll, Lancaster, Lithopolis, Millersport, Pickerington and Sugar Grove) have banded together to create a "Trail of Scarecrows," a quaint and some might say horribly haunting autumnal exercise featuring creatively stuffed garments manipulated into lifelike poses with assorted fall materials for heads — straw, pumpkins, feed bags, etc.
And everyone from the junior high staff to the orthodontist to the fire department is getting in on the action.
The trail is open through Oct. 31 and visitors can access a map to find each scarecrow via the Fairfield County Trail of Scarecrows Facebook page. You are also encouraged to vote for your favorite in each community. Winners will receive $50, a People's Choice award and the honor of being known as one of the best scarecrow creators in the "Scarecrow Capital of Ohio."
