Ratner Money Leaning Toward Sherrod Brown Over Josh Mandel

Posted By on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 at 11:31 AM

There’s been a lot of talk about how much support Republican U.S. Senate candidate Josh Mandel will attract in his race against incumbent senator Sherrod Brown from Northeast Ohio’s wealthy and liberal Jewish community — which has supported his runs for state legislature and state treasurer.

But it turns out that Northeast Ohio’s largest and most politically active (and moneyed) Jewish families, Forest City’s Ratners, are leaning slightly the other way — 15 of them have ponied up $51,050 in donations to Brown. Meanwhile, Albert and Audrey Ratner have deposited $40,000 into Mandel-related coffers.

This suggests that Mandel may not have the groundswell of support he thinks he does from people who share his background but disagree with him on issues like the Paycheck Fairness Act and the Heartbeat Bill.

“The only thing he has a corner on is special interests,” says Brown campaign spokesman Justin Barasky, referring to groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce who have dumped over $7 million so far into ads attacking Brown.

But Mandel apparently has no corner on family interests. His wife, Ilana Shafran, is the granddaughter of one of Forest City’s founders and he’s still coming up short on Ratner funds.
