Update: Edwins Leadership & Restaurant Institute will host an Oscar Watch Party at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. A documentary film about the place was nominated for an Oscar in the documentary short category.

At the watch party, there will be hors d'oeuvres and an open bar as well as an Oscar ballot competition. Complimentary valet parking will be available. Tickets cost $100 each.

Previous Post: Earlier this year, Knife Skills, a documentary film that follows the launch of the local haute cuisine restaurant Edwins, a place staffed by men and women recently released from prison, won the Audience Award for Best Short Documentary at the Traverse City Film Festival and made its Ohio premiere when it screened at the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival.

Now, the film has made a short list for the Oscars. It's among the 10 finalists from the more than 77 eligible entries in the Documentary Shorts category. Of the 10 finalists, only five films will make the ballot. Those nominations will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 23.

Original Post: Over the course of his career, filmmaker and journalist Thomas Lennon has won an Academy Award, received three Academy nominations and won two national Emmys.

He’s also had two films that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

His latest effort, Knife Skills, follows the launch of the local haute cuisine restaurant Edwins, a place staffed by men and women recently released from prison. It recently won the Audience Award for Best Short Documentary at the Traverse City Film Festival.

The movie will make its Ohio premiere next month when it screens at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival.

“When I began filming, I had no background in criminal justice, and no agenda,” says Lennon in a press release announcing its screening at the Chagrin fest. “I just filmed what I saw: an improbable group of men and women caught up in a truly improbable endeavor. Their whole lives seemed to be on the line."

Lennon and members of the cast will be on hand for the local screening.

"I’m excited to be sharing the film with audiences at a moment when criminal reform and re-entry are such pressing public issues," says Lennon. "And I’m excited also to come back to the city where this story played out. Over the course of the production, I flew into the Cleveland and Akron airports more times than I can count, my Canon camera loaded into my carry-on backpack, wanting to record what I saw. To come back this time with a finished film and present it at Chagrin is thrilling.”
