Launched in France in 1982 (where it’s called Fête de la Musique), Make Music Day has become an annual celebration in the States and around the world. On Thursday, June 21, this year’s event will take place in Cleveland, one of 70 U.S. cities (and one of 800 cities in 120 foreign countries) to participate.

According to the press release announcing the event, “Make Music Day celebrates and promotes the natural music maker in all of us, regardless of ability." The event caters to musicians of all ages, backgrounds and genres. Expect everyone from bucket drummers to opera singers and hip-hop artists to participate.

Performers can register for a specific venue in advance or be assigned a venue. The goal is “to celebrate, create and share music with friends, neighbors and strangers.”

This year’s event in Cleveland will include a mass drum circle and sing along activities.
