CD Review: The Black Crowes

Croweology (Silver Arrow)

The Black Crowes' mastery at obliging both Jimmy Page's and Widespread Panic's fan bases works against them on Croweology, two CDs of favorites performed acoustic. There's already a popular unplugged version of "She Talks to Angels" out there, but "Jealous Again" still has a headshaking swagger and killer chord change. This is mostly wallpaper, with only a couple of choruses standing out. "My Morning Song" comes off as a slipperier take on the Allman Brothers' "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," and "Thorn in My Pride" represents a second disc that drowns in harmonica. You're better off with 1999's kinda-fun By Your Side, which was at least motivated, or the Crowes' debut, Shake Your Money Maker, which had hits and a sense of purpose. — Dan Weiss
