In some cultures, May 1st is a celebration of spring. Parties are held, poles are decorated with ribbon, and kids get off of school.
In Cleveland, some students might be staying home today too – but in their case it has nothing to do with springtime celebrations.
In these parts of the woods, May 1st is known by a different name: “Beat Up a White Kid Day.” The holiday – if one can call it that – has been going on for years. Some claim the event started as a result of desegregation tensions in the schools. Others say the day was started in retaliation for the Rodney King beatings. But its long been known as a day for minorities to avenge alleged wrongs done to them by whites. And as a result, it’s a day that many white children in the Cleveland schools call in sick…

  1. Wait: Does that mean it’s also Beat Up a White Kid at Work? Because I totally unprepared for that.

  2. If this is true, I hope the white kids who are staying home are spending the day filling tube socks with rolls of quarters and learning how to tie nooses.

  3. Just check your local news, every day is victimize a white person day in America!

  4. I live on the East side of Cleveland, and this shit has been going on since the 70s. There is NEVER any coverage, and usually no arrests. When there are arrests, the perpetrators are cited for assault instead of a hate crime. White America, you better get off your fucking knees, before it is too late.

  5. For some reason, this sort of thing is never reported, so when I talk about this happening when I was a child, no one believes me since they can find so little evidence of it online. When I was in middle school (99-2001) I went to a Cleveland school near Fleet Avenue, and everyone knew about this; there was no debate about it existing. I saw a white kid get jumped in the bathroom by four black kids…it was bad, this kid was bleeding everywhere. No coverage though, nothing on the news. One year, our black vice-principle made an announcement that any racial discrimination would not be tolerated, and that shit all but ended that year (2000). He was a bit of a savior. I always decided to go to school anyway to show I wasnt afraid. I personally didnt get much more than shoved and called names, but a lot of kids got it much worse. Again, Ive been called a liar because people cant find much online about it, but discrimination against whites wont get readers/clicks so they dont report, or care. As an adult, I look at it as kids being kids, but I hope these kids (on both sides) didnt grow up with hate in their hearts.
