In its latest effort to promote hometown sentiment by doing cool things that other cool cities do, Cleveland will now be hosting what's intended to be the first annual "Cleveland Rocks" New Year's Eve Party on Public Square. The Ohio Homecoming Group, a collective of local young professionals, along with city and county officials, made the announcement this morning on the steps of City Hall.

Pegged as a celebration of unity, organizers are hoping for a turnout in the 20,000+ range. Ed Fitzgerald said he thinks this is a sign of "the next generation" being really creative and "taking charge of things a little bit."

Via the PD, the event will feature live music, "special guests," food trucks and a fireworks show. It's basically a standard outdoor NYE party to offer an alternative to the bar/restaurant scene, organizers said.

Whether or not young folks — for that is their demo — will don their earmuffs and venture from their house parties is a question we won't know the answer to for another three months, but the party is slated to be free, so that's a plus.

Ohio Homecoming Group partner Alonzo Mitchell had this to say in his remarks:

When we were brainstorming our next big idea to engage and impact Clevelanders, we thought about the big New Year's events in other markets and were shocked that no one had attempted this type of event in Cleveland since 1999. We're thrilled to pioneer this celebration with the support of the city, county and our partners to bring something fresh and exciting to downtown that will help keep people in Cleveland on New Year's.

Plus, Public Square always does look really enchanting and winter-wonderland-ish around the New Year.
