Tom Hamilton's Giambi Walkoff Call vs. Chicago's Hawk Harrelson's

The Cleveland Indians sauteed the Chicago White Sox in dramatic, walk-off fashion at the Jake last night. Resident octogenarian Jason Giambi pulled a sinking fastball — I actually have no idea if it was a fastball or a slider or what, but it was low and inside — deep to right field and the 20,000+ in attendance rejoiced with the fervor occasioned by realistic postseason prospects.

Final Score: 5-4. Whammo.

The Indians were up 3-2 heading into the ninth. Chris Perez, as is his wont, allowed two solo HRs in the top of the inning while Cleveland threw up its hands and lofted four-letter words at nearby TV screens.

It's almost as if Perez orchestrates these blown saves to make the comebacks all the more thrilling and improbable. In that respect, he's rendered us all a great service.

Nonetheless, he's become a liability at home, no thanks to the fans' notorious lack of support for the bearded cannabis consumer-cum-hothead. But the even-keeled Giambi seemed to have the right approach re: Perez. Instead of booing or celebrating his own heroics, he had this to say (via CBSSports):

"I made [Perez] give me a hug because he needed it. He can wipe this away and start fresh tomorrow."

We can only hope. Thanks Papa G.

On to this post's entree:

Tom Hamilton is our radio play-by-play guy, obviously. His calls are legend. But our friends over at Awful Announcing directed us to a choice comparison: Hamilton vs. the dour White Sox TV play-by-play guy Hawk Harrelson, he of the old-fashioned colloquialisms and cornfed south-Midwestern twang.

The range of emotion (or lack thereof, in Hawk's case) speaks for itself, but have a listen to Hawk's call first, followed by the triumphant Ham. Note that Harrelson, dejected and literally speechless, is silent for a full minute before summoning the strength to offer analysis and his color guy swoops in for some bland logistics.

The Jake will be rocking tonight.
